With the goal of an egalitarian society, Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s watchword has always been to consistently strive towards creating a social structure where there is no poverty and realize the vision of a prosperous and happy India.

Mr. Naidu draws his inspiration from the founder of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Sri Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR), who claimed society to be a temple and its people the resident gods. His commitment to serving the public and ensuring them pervasive empowerment has been the driving force behind Mr. Naidu’s political vision and achievements.

Holding this vision true, he has introduced revolutionary development models and innovative strategies, while focusing on the importance of public participation in state governance, as the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Through “Janmabhoomi” and “Shramadan”, Mr. Naidu encouraged the public, as well as the Non-resident Indians (NRIs) to voluntarily contribute their mite to the development of their home state.

From generating capital to provide elementary schooling to ensuring health and employment opportunities, Mr. Naidu has carved a legacy of pervasive and all-inclusive development.

Childhood

Chandrababu Naidu was born on April 20, 1950, in Naravaripalli, eight kilometres from Chandragiri in Chittoor district. Among several other families who migrated to this village from Kondaveedu area in Guntur, was a farmer Nara Karjoora Naidu and his wife Ammannama, parents of Chandrababu.

Owing to the meticulous political journey of Mr. Naidu, the village of Naravaripalli hitherto little known to people, rose to prominence. Eldest amongst his three siblings, a brother and two sisters, Mr. Naidu exhibited his talent, efficiency even while he was a child and rose to become one of the most astute politicians that Andhra Pradesh had ever produced.

With the encouragement of his parents, Mr. Naidu completed his primary schooling in Seshapuram and pursued higher education in Tirupati. It was at the college premises and at the hostel, Mr. Naidu’s leadership qualities surfaced. While studying BA economics, politics and history at SV Arts College, he had a deep understanding of the social structure and the problems at the roots of it.

In the course of his graduation, he had established village development committees including the Vinayaka Sangham, a social development programme. While pursuing his education, he didn’t fail to dedicate his time for social work and development. He gathered resources from the common public as contributions and took up the channelizing of irrigation water to the fields. He was known for his leadership qualities, his ability to mobilise people for collective social work and his keenness for consistent growth.

The seeds for Mr. Naidu’s future political life were laid during his college days at SV University. During the days of his master’s course in Economics, he immersed himself in preparing a research study on Acharya Ranga and also studied village economic development. At the University campus he became a student leader, becoming an integral component of the political structure of institution and influencing several student unions. SV University became the foundation stone for many current politicians in Chittoor District and in Andhra Pradesh such as Congress leader Pileru Ramachandra Reddy and CPI State Joint Secretary K.S. Narayana. Mr. Naidu was quite a multi-tasker handling agriculture, education at one end and social work and political activities on the other.

Student Leader

The seeds for Mr. Naidu’s future political life were laid during his college days at SV University. While studying MA Economics at the same university, and preparing for a research study on Acharya Ranga and his work on village economic development he became a student leader. He was a deciding factor in many of the student elections and student unions in the university. SV University became the foundation stone for many current politicians in Chittoor District and in Andhra Pradesh. Chittoor district Congress leader Pileru Ramachandra Reddy and CPI State Joint Secretary K.S. Narayana are some of his contemporaries. Mr. Naidu was quite a multi-tasker handling agriculture, education at one end and social work and political activities on the other.

Entry into Politics

It was this political acumen and commitment to social welfare that brought Nara Chandrababu Naidu to the political limelight. As the Chandragiri Block Youth Secretary, he provided crucial support for the victims of the devastating floods that took place in the Divisema delta of river Krishna in 1977.

Being a popular student leader, he garnered support from several student unions to contest the MLC elections but was forced to withdraw his candidature because of unfair political pressures. However he persevered further and contested the Assembly Elections of 1978.

Later, with the establishment of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) by Sri Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR), heralding a new chapter in the state’s politics, Mr. Naidu entered the political scene as a youth leader from Chandragiri and after that there was no looking back from him.

Leader of Opposition (10 years : 2004 – 2014)

In the 2004 Assembly election, after graciously accepting defeat by a nominal margin of 5%, the Telugu Desam took up the role of a responsible opposition with Mr. Naidu as the Leader of Opposition. With issues of false propaganda & the discontentment caused by the severity of the Andhra drought among the public as well as factors of anti-incumbency and extremism by Naxalites working against the TDP, the party under Mr. Naidu withdrew into self-reflection and analysis. Mr. Naidu claimed this defeat as an opportunity and started rebuilding the party.

As a responsible opposition leader, Mr. Naidu did the historical Padayathra in the entire state under the “Vastunna Meekosam” program. He met thousands of people during this program and reassured them of his relentless vision for public welfare and improvement of the farming sector. He met the party workers, rebuilt their confidence and motivated the entire party to fight the first election for new Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Nara Chandrababu Naidu has always had a rarely seen approach towards politics which combined his pledge for comprehensive development with an acumen for deliberating practical and effective policies.

His approach towards development is non-doctrinal and believes in absorbing good aspects of various development models, striking a co-operative relationship with the public and encouraging them to participate in the progress of the State. An able and efficient administrator, he became synonymous with meticulous leadership. In 1995, as the chief minister he introduced many market-based reforms while simultaneously formulating many populist schemes which were appreciated for their effectiveness and originality. IT and ITES sectors boomed during his tenure, giving rise to a separate state level IT policy.

Mr. Naidu worked 18 hours a day and set an example for the entire administration. He brought the novelty of attaching the value for ground-level hard work with the grandeur of chief ministership. He gave special emphasis to technological advancement of the state and modernized administration by computerizing a number of government operations.

He came out with a Vision-2020 policy document for the all-round development of the state and implemented it with passion, be it in IT, bio-technology or tourism.

Mr. Naidu’s vision includes making Andhra Pradesh another Singapore. He launched initiatives which aim at achieving excellence in all walks of life and focus on community building through teamwork.
