AP is envisioned to become a model State for renewable energy and energy efficiency programmes. 2148 MW of solar power is installed and 3952 MW of wind power is installed. The State is taking up a 160 MW wind-solar hybrid project with energy storage, to be the largest in the entire world and completed by mid-2019. It is planned to add 10,000 MW of solar and 8,000 MW of wind energy in the State by 2022.
The total installed thermal and renewable energy capacity is currently at 18.49 GW, and is targeted to reach 49 GW. Out of this installed thermal energy capacity is 9.99 GW and is targeted to reach 18 GW, and installed hydro energy is at 1.8 GW. Whereas, the installed renewable energy is at 6.69 GW and is targeted to reach 29 GW.
There has been a 12% point improvement in Renewable energy in 2017 from 2016, which has resulted in a reduction of about 8.5 million tons of GHG emissions.
Energy efficiency is expected to achieve 25% reduction in energy consumption. 6.18 lakh street lights have been replaced with energy-efficient lights in urban local bodies, 22,955 bore wells with solar pumps are installed, ECBC (Energy Conservation Building Code) is adopted and mandated to all new commercial and public meetings, 25,000 5-star rated pump sets are distributed, 9.72% Transmission & Distribution loss was incurred in 2017-18 as compared to 13.33% in 2014, and 2.17 crore LED bulbs have been distributed to households.
